Intro to Web Development: Part 1 (HTML/CSS)

Start time2:30 PM
End time4:30 PM
TypeWorkshop
HostHoward Ou
DescHave you ever wondered how to create your own websites or web pages? As we move into a more and more digitized world, this is a skill that is becoming more crucial than ever. At the most basic level, it is all HyperText Markup Language (HTML). This workshop will explore how to create basic web pages using HTML and style them with CSS or Cascading Style Sheets, a language for describing how different parts of an HTML document are presented.
PrereqsThere are no prerequisites; this workshop starts from the very basics. If you want to follow along, it is recommended that you prepare an editor or IDE that you are comfortable with using to edit HTML files before this workshop. Notepad++ (https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/) is an easy-to-use editor that provides syntax highlighting, and it is what I will be using for demonstrations. It is not required that you use this editor, though; use whichever editor you prefer.

Intro to Git and Github

Start time4:30 PM
End time5:30 PM

HostDawson Teu
DescGit is the world’s most popular version control system, and Github is the world’s most popular place to host open source projects. In this workshop, we’ll learn about what they can do, and how we can use them. First, we’ll explore what version control is and why it would be useful not only for this hackathon, but also for any of your future projects. Next, we’ll learn about some basic Git concepts and demonstrate them using GitHub Desktop. Finally, we’ll cover hosting your projects on GitHub, and some other useful GitHub features.
PrereqsNo prerequisites. If you wish to follow along with the demonstrations, please download GitHub Desktop (https://desktop.github.com/) beforehand.

DescTwo years ago, I built lyrics.rip with a friend. Lyrics.rip is a website that uses a simple algorithm called a Markov chain to generate fake lyrics for any musical artist, in their style. The website ended up going viral on Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit, collecting over a million visits since launch. In this workshop, we’re going to use the same Markov chain algorithm to write programs that can generate fake songs, stories, and poems!
