Rules

Remember that hackathons are like marathons. Some people go to compete, but most people take part to improve themselves and have fun. Make sure you're embracing the hacker spirit by collaborating with other teams, helping others, and having fun.

Participants

To be considered an "eligible participant":

  • Be enrolled in a secondary educational institution (high school) located in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Be at least 13 years of age on the day of the hackathon.
  • Not be disqualified from the hackathon due to a violation of rules.

Teams

  • All team members must be eligible participants.
  • Teams may include up to 4 participants. Participants are permitted to work alone.
  • Participants may not be part of more than one team.

Projects and submissions

  • Projects may only be worked on during the allotted hacking time.
    • Starting time: June 25, 7:00pm EDT
    • Ending time: June 27, 11:00am EDT
    • Working on a project past the deadline will result in immediate removal and/or disqualification.
    • Generic preparation, such as installing software, is permitted.
    • Any building beforehand, such as creating a starter project, is not permitted.
  • Participants can use libraries, frameworks, or open-source code in their projects.
  • Submission must not plagiarize code or design.
  • Participants must properly disclose any parts of their creation that they did not make themselves. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • APIs
    • Third-party libraries
  • The creation needs to be functional in some way and not just a concept. Hackathons are about creating things, and turning your ideas into action, even if what you make isn't super polished.
    • Examples of what is allowed:
      • Web page with info made in HTML and CSS
      • Calculator
      • Notes app, where users can type things in
      • Hiking app that uses real-time data
    • Examples of what is not allowed:
      • A UI mockup drawing, made in Photoshop
      • An essay describing an idea
  • We want to include as many projects as we can, while making sure we all focus on creating, so if you're unsure whether or not your idea is okay, feel free to ask us!
  • Submissions should include the project material, like source code and graphical assets.

Judging

  • In order to be judged and receive prizes (except for the students' choice prize) participants must present their project live to a panel of judges at their time, after which the judges will be able to ask questions.
  • Participants' presentations may be no longer than 3 minutes and will be given a maximum 2 minutes to answer questions from judges.

Other

  • The organizers have the final say in any matter or conflict regarding the rules.
  • Disqualified participants are no longer considered "eligible participants", and thus cannot be on a team.
  • Recess Hacks will not share sensitive information, such as names and emails with third parties without your consent. However, we may email you about our sponsors requiring such info for purposes like optionally claiming swag, and prizes.
  • Participants may be removed from the hackathon at the organizers' discretion, for reasons including but not limited to:
    • Breaching the Code of Conduct
